Anne Bassett Kelley Collection

Anne Bassett Kelley (Beloit College class of 1907), known as Nan, became a missionary teacher in China. Her great niece donated an extensive collection of Kelley’s correspondence from China during 1919-1923 as well as letters from her adopted daughter in China to Kelley and other family members, dating from the 1940s through the 1990s. The digital collection currently includes Kelley’s 1919-1923 letters.

Beloit Relays

From the 1930s through the 1970s, Beloit College hosted track and field events for athletes from more than 50 colleges and universities. This digital collection contains images of cover pages from the official Beloit Relays program booklets as well as photographs of some of the Beloit athletes who took part in the events.

Chamberlin Hall of Science Collection

In commemoration of the Chamberlin Hall of Science (1968-2008), the Beloit College Library compiled this digital collection, which combines 90 photographs and slides from the Beloit College Archives with 32 digital images captured by members of the Beloit College community.

Geology Lantern Slides

In early 2016, these lantern slides were donated to the Beloit College Archives by the Department of Geology. Little is known about their date of production or the company that created them. Previously used in classroom teaching, they depict a variety of geological features across the globe.

Helen Brace Emerson Correspondence

This collection includes letters written to Helen Brace Emerson from her cousin, suffragist and president of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Frances Willard, between the late 1860s and Willard’s death in 1898. Correspondence from other writers provide details about Willard’s final days.

Herbert Gaytes Collection

Herbert Gaytes, Beloit College class of 1893, was a gifted amateur photographer who photographed campus activities and local scenes. This collection also includes Gaytes’ photographs of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Histories of Beloit College

The Histories of Beloit College Collection includes published commencement addresses and essays as well as Beloit College President Edward Dwight Eaton’s 1928 history, which contains a thorough account of the College’s origins and development, and a history begun by faculty member Robert Richardson in the 1940s that updates Eaton’s account. Never published, this book contains a great deal of valuable footnotes and marginalia.

History of the Sciences at Beloit College

This collection features 92 photographs from the Beloit College Archives documenting a variety of scientific disciplines spanning the lifetime of the college, including biology, geology and chemistry.

Jay “Ding” Darling Collection

Jay Norwood Darling was a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist who attended Beloit College from 1895-1900, where he served as art director for the college yearbook. The digital collection features illustrations Darling created for the 1899 yearbook as well as a selection of Darling’s letters and other writings.

Laura Aldrich Neese Diaries Collection

Born February 17, 1889, Laura Janvrin Aldrich studied at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and attended Beloit College with the class of 1912. On June 16, 1914, Laura Aldrich married Elbert H. Neese. While her husband served as president of the Beloit Corporation (now known as Iron Works), she worked closely with the Beloit Foundation, the First Congregational Church, and the Art League of Beloit. She was also a practicing artist and in 1952, Beloit College awarded Neese an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts for her commitment to the discipline of art and for her longtime service to the college. This digital collection includes beautifully-illustrated diaries containing accounts of Neese’s time in Beloit and abroad.

Logan Museum of Anthropology

The Logan Museum of Anthropology houses over 300,000 archaeological and ethnographic objects from 123 countries. The objects made available through Recollection Wisconsin include bandolier bags, baskets, beadwork, bitten bark, and silver jewelry. Wisconsin and Upper Great Lakes tribal affiliations represented include Ojibwe, Menominee, Ho-Chunk and Potawatomi.

Pearsons Hall Collection

Pearsons Hall was commissioned and built in the late 19th century to serve as Beloit College’s science hall. To oversee its construction, College officials sought renowned architect and urban planner Daniel Hudson Burnham. This collection contains over 70 letters, postcards and images documenting the early life of the building.

Ray Metzker and Bob Miller Photography Collection

This collection includes photographs taken by students Ray Metzker and Bob Miller in the late 1940s and early 1950s for the Beloit College News Service. Metzker went on to become a professional photographer of considerable reknown. These photographs document a wide range of student activities, with a heavy focus on athletics, homecoming parades, and other events.
