Travel Back in Time to Mequon

Did you know that Mequon, in Ozaukee County, is one of the largest cities in Wisconsin – by land area. It is 46.28 square miles, larger than Green Bay, Eau Claire, and La Crosse. Images from Frank L. Weyenberg Library and the Ozaukee County Historical Society.

First saloon in Mequon, built by Wm. Opitz in 1840. The building was sold to Paulina Hentschel in 1866 when Wm. Opitz moved to Saukville. Aug. Hodann became the owner in 1872, when he married widow Hentschel.
Wagner’s Tavern. Building was located on the southeast corner of Wauwatosa and Mequon Road. It was built in 1846 as a saloon and grocery store.
Toll gate on Cedarburg Road, Mequon, 1910-1929. It was located a half mile south of Donges Bay Road.
