On the banks of the Milwaukee River, where two major American Indian trails existed, water has always been a critical feature of Saukville, Wisconsin. Until the 1830s, Menominee and members of other tribes, lived in the area, but were required by U.S. government treaties to move. As European immigration grew, the river remained important for agriculture and mills, but it has also meant regular flooding. Also, the Cedarburg Bog, southeastern Wisconsin’s largest intact wetland complex is nearby.
