Whitewater, Wisconsin is the homeland of several Native Nations: Peoria, Sauk & Fox, Potawatomi, Miami, Ho-Chunk, and Kickapoo. European settlers began arriving in the area in the early 19th century, attracted by its natural resources and potential for farming. The town experienced significant growth with the establishment of the Whitewater Manufacturing Company in 1868, which produced a variety of goods including furniture, window sashes, and doors. The founding of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1868 further bolstered the town’s development, shaping it into an educational hub. Throughout its history, Whitewater has maintained its small-town charm while adapting to modern times, fostering a vibrant community and a thriving economy. Today, it is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and rich cultural heritage, attracting visitors from near and far. Thanks to UW Digital Collections and Wisconsin Historical Society for today’s images, which mostly come from a collection of lithographic prints from 1857.
