CCDC Host Reflections: Barron County Historical Society

Hello from the Barron County Historical Society! I’m Tamera Schutz, the Executive Director. Three years ago, we started digitizing our photos, with vague thoughts of sharing them online and providing another way to ensure their preservation. The digitization of these photographs raised a lot of questions, as we did not know where to go from there. Participation in CCDC has helped answer some of those questions.

Jodi Kiffmeyer, a graduate student at UW-Madison, has been working diligently all summer setting up a system and helping us move forward with this project. She has developed a workflow, worked on policies, and examined methods of sharing our photographs online, to see which method would work best for us.

With the procedure manual that Jodi has developed, our volunteers will be able to continue this important work. We have a much better idea of what is in our collection and are better able to assist visitors and online guests who wish to do historical and family research.

The resources and advice that CCDC has provided and Jodi’s hard work have given us a valuable boost in making our collection accessible and searchable. We feel much more confident and will be able to continue this work.
