My name is Laura Kayacan, the Adult Services Librarian at Door County Library in Sturgeon Bay, and I am one of the Supervisors for this summer’s CCDC program.  I look forward to Georgia Brown’s help with the digital preservation of our files, and to the guidance from Mentor Sarah Titus, who is nearby at St. Norbert College in DePere.

Door County Library consists of 8 branches found throughout the County from Washington Island in the north to Forestville in Southern Door.  Once a month we have a library staff meeting where branch librarians join the Sturgeon Bay staff to discuss library business. Since Georgia planned her first visit to Door County for the day of our June meeting, we invited her to join us and added a short explanation of CCDC to the agenda.

The CCDC project is especially important to Door County Library because we have a number of digital projects and files that need to be preserved, and since we hope to become more involved in collecting local stories and digitizing Door County history in the future. This summer’s work will prepare us for upcoming projects.

One important concept we learned at the CCDC workshop in May, was the 3-2-1 rule for digital preservation.  We have our files in 3 locations, the master files, backups, and access copies online, but we do not have the files in 2 good formats.  Currently, I have backups on multiple hard drives, along with some files on DVDs. The workshop made it clear that DVD’s are not a good storage medium, so one of my main concerns is to figure out which reliable second format to use.

I discussed options with our Archives Researcher, Steve Rice, our Technical Support Specialist, Shauwn Rosendale, and John Sarnowski of the ResCarta Foundation, and I hope to discuss this further with Georgia while she is in Door County.  M-DISC’s seemed like a good choice at first, but they hold relatively little data and are fairly expensive in comparison to other options. I hope to research cloud options a little more, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

We have a lot of work to do this summer, and I am really grateful to have the help of the CCDC grant and everyone involved!
