Recollection Wisconsin 2024 Year in Review

1931 Alumni Association calendar. UW-Madison Archives.

As we reflect on 2024, it’s clear that this year has been one of growth, collaboration, and forward momentum for Recollection Wisconsin. We’ve not only maintained our work but expanded into new and impactful initiatives. Together with the Recollection Wisconsin community, we’ve made strides toward preserving and sharing Wisconsin’s unique cultural heritage in innovative ways.

  1. The Foundations Working Group, in collaboration with our Governing Board and Steering Committee, successfully drafted, refined, and finalized a mission statement, vision statement, and set of organizational values.
  2. We began the Recollection Wisconsin Digitization Initiative, which places paid practicum students with cultural heritage organizations for the dual benefit of preserving materials through digitization and fostering the next generation of cultural heritage professionals.
  3. The All Together Now Metadata Initiative working group conducted in-depth research and began crafting guidelines for updated metadata practices. These guidelines will ensure that the language we use to describe materials reflects the richness of voices and stories represented in our collections.

We worked toward these accomplishments, which are more fully described in the full report, alongside the day-to-day work we do to share Wisconsin’s unique collections with the world: onboarding content partners, training on digital projects, harvesting and aggregating metadata. This year was one of remarkable acceleration of innovative efforts and expansion of Recollection Wisconsin’s services to the cultural heritage community. The momentum has energized the consortium, partners, and community members as we build on successes and lean into new opportunities.
