We’re excited to share that Recollection Wisconsin has once again been recognized by Family Tree Magazine as one of the “Best State Genealogy Websites” in the country for 2026.

Each year, Family Tree Magazine highlights outstanding online resources that help people discover and explore their family history. Their annual list recognizes websites that make genealogical research more accessible and engaging. We’re honored to be included alongside so many excellent organizations and archives from across the United States.
At Recollection Wisconsin, genealogy is really about stories. Stories of families, neighborhoods, communities, and everyday life in Wisconsin. Through photographs, newspapers, yearbooks, city directories, maps, oral histories, military records, and other historical materials contributed by libraries, museums, archives, and historical societies across the state, researchers can uncover connections to people and places from Wisconsin’s past.
This recognition also belongs to the many Wisconsin cultural heritage organizations, libraries, museums and archives that contribute materials to Recollection Wisconsin. Their work digitizing and sharing local history makes these discoveries possible. We’re grateful to our partners across the state for helping make Wisconsin history accessible to everyone.
If you’re new to family history research, our site includes a dedicated guide with tips for genealogists, suggested source types, and search strategies to help you get started. Whether you’re tracing deep Wisconsin roots, researching a local community, or simply following a family story wherever it leads, we invite you to explore the collections and discover something new.
