Listening to War: Harmful Content Statement

Users are advised that some of the interviews in Listening to War: Wisconsin’s Wartime Oral Histories contain descriptions of violence, injury, disease, mental distress, and other trauma. This includes eyewitness accounts of wartime combat and its aftermath as well as first-hand experiences of refugee camps, concentration camps, and prisoner-of-war camps.

In addition, the interviews presented here reflect a wide range of individual speakers’ experiences, viewpoints, and time periods. Users may encounter harmful language, including the depiction of racist or hateful attitudes toward marginalized communities and the use of terms that are outdated, insensitive, or offensive. Recollection Wisconsin rejects these biased views; however, we recognize that these viewpoints illustrate social mindsets and perspectives of their time.

If you encounter language or content in this collection that you find offensive or harmful, please contact us at info@recollectionwisconsin.org. We will forward your report to the organization(s) that have contributed content to the collection.

Statement adapted from the Black Women’s Suffrage Digital Collection Harmful Language Statement (Digital Public Library of America) and the Digital Collection Offensive Language Policy (Presbyterian Historical Society).
